A couple of months ago one of the men in our church, a fella named Gene Michalak came up to me with the idea to put our Elevation services on local community cable TV. He said he'd be willing to go take the training at community television to be well-prepared for the task. He also noted that as a result he would be able to check out and utilize all of their cameras and equipment free of charge. He also mentioned that Community Cable would be glad to put us on weekly for at no charge and play it several times a week.

Initially I felt kind of uncomfortable about being on television, I didn't want people to think I was one of those guys; you know the guys with the clear plexiglass podium, who jones after your benjamins, and who try to grab the wool and yank it firmly down over your occipital lobes. I've never had a desire to be on TV or radio or write books or do any of the other things that many people look at as being symbols of ministerial success. So this is a stretch for me personally. I want to love and shepherd the people God gives me, reach out to those unconvinced around me and teach his Word faithfully, that's all.

Gene reminded me that this would be an opportunity for people to see Elevation in action, people who might not come through the doors without seeing it first. He noted community tv would be a good way to reach out to our community since our worship service and teaching looks and feels very different from the other church services on community cable in our area.

As a result Elevation services is now on community cable television 8 to 12 times a week, free of any charge to Elevation.

Church planters take note - if you have some folks who like to play with cameras and computers would be willing to go get trained at the local cable TV station... - if it's like ours they can check out the gear for free your service will be broadcast free. This is also great opportunity to incarnationally plug-in with people that work at community TV in your town and serve them.

All I need now is a plexiglass podium...

In the last message from Wisdom for Dummies we talked about wise finances in challenging times. The last point in the message was on giving to God first. Here are some other ideas on how to give in a glorious worshipful and Scriptural way.

Worshipfully
Proverbs 3:9 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops

Regularly
1 Cor 16:1 Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

Proportionally
1 Cor 16:1 Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.
"a sum of money in keeping with his income"

Sacrificially
2 Corinthians 8:1 And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
     --Jesus on sacrificial giving:
Mark 12:41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.
Mark 12:43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on."
---I ask myself is my gift to Jesus 'Sacrificial or superficial'

Faith-FULL-y
2 Corinthians 8:3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.

Excellently
2 Corinthians 8:7 But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us--see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

Generously
2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

Thoughtfully
2 Corinthians 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
"should give what he has decided in his heart to give"

Willingly
2 Corinthians 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Joyfully
2 Corinthians 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
"God loves it when we give with joy!"

These passages are Proverbs 5:1-23, Proverbs 6:20-35 & Proverbs 7:1-17. As I mentioned on Sunday Elevation family member Peter Moore is currently incarcerated over the hill in San Jose. We hope and pray he'll be home with us soon. I visited Peter last week and he gave me an open letter for the church to encourage us. Peter is doing well, is in good spirits and ministering to the other men locked up with him. It would be excellent if we bombed him with letters from home to encourage HIM. Here's where you can write Peter.

The first letter of Peter to the church of Elevation

From Peter, a humble servant of God striving to become a new person through Jesus Christ to my friends and family at it's church body known as Elevation in the city of Santa Cruz.

Greetings my friends from the confines of cell number 44 here at Elmwood Milpitas (correctional facility). Rejoice with me for the Lord God is good and has delivered me from myself. The past few weeks have been nothing short of amazing and totally thought provoking. I can truly say that never have I felt as close to God as I do at this moment!!

While being here, for however long God deems he needs me, is affording me the opportunity to both grow on a personal level and share the word of God and the message of His forgiveness to a "captive" audience in a way that most people and churches cannot access. I know a large percentage of the people who believe they will change once they reclaim their freedom will fall back into the comfort of their "old ways", but even then I hope that the message of God will be like a seed planted in the back of their mind that will one day germinate and start to grow.

It occurred to me the other day that some people pay thousand's to go away to mountain retreats to find solace and peace and here I am receiving the same "for free" except I can't leave when I choose to - all for free. The freedom to study the bible, meditate and reflect is a treat. I hope all of you will afford yourselves the luxury of trying. I know from now on that this will be an essential part of my life as a living, active and able follower of Christ.

Should this letter get to Chuckk, and therefore you all, before Sunday July 4th then I wish you all a very Happy 4th of July Independence day. Just spare a thought for us Brits amongst you as a reminder, for you to win we had to lose!! Even with the current state of the economy, I am not sure if it was such a gain after all.

I look forward to receiving news of our first mission as a church to Mexico. I know we are just at the start of the adventure of our lives. As I have said to Chuckk, we should find a way to capture our journey so that we may share it with other new churches and indeed established churches to show and proclaim what an amazing thing we have accomplished through and for God. It seems hard to believe that 12 months ago we were destined to be homeless and penniless and look where God has put us!!

So my friends, I wish you all well and ask that we take stock of our lives and give thanks to God on a continuous basis for the blessings that he has given us that we simply take for granted in our normal everyday lives. I find it interesting that some of the most disadvantaged seem to be the most appreciative amongst us. Perhaps there is a lesson in there for all of us.

For those amongst you who have prayed for me and helped me undertake some essential changes while I am here I say a deeply heart felt thank you. To those of you who are "on the sidelines" I ask that you get involved and see where God leads you. We know his promise to us is good and it is up to us to ask for his help and guidance, he is the constant. It is us who vary in commitment to him.

To Omar and "the band" I miss you greatly, unfortunately some 20-30 guys singing verses and hymns doesn't quite compare, but the thought and hope is there if nothing else.

I look forward to being reunited with you all very soon.

Your friend and fellow servant in God,

Peter

Keep Peter in your prayers and know that a letter from you would be huge!
