Stopping iPhone / Computer Speaker Interference

If you own an iPhone and use it anywhere near computer speakers the "digital gerbil chirping noises" probably drive you nuts. I came up with a free-fix solution for this annoyance. Take some aluminum foil, folded a bit larger than the iPhone footprint, place the foil (shiny side out) inside a small ziplock bag and lay your iPhone on it on your desk this will totally eliminate the noise problems coming through your computer speakers. Ahhhhhh the sounds of silence!

reCONNECT Series Audio, and also Kidneys for Jesus

reconnect with tagline.jpg
The complete reCONNECT series podcasts are now up online at the Elevation Media Vault and on iTunes also (search chuckk gerwig to find us on iTunes easily). If you've struggled with quiet times, feel disconnected from friendship and intimacy with Jesus, are bored with your devotions or are just experiencing a dry time in general we hope these messages will be a blessing to you.

Also check out the amazing testimony from our latest worship and communion night as Melissa Boose our Elevation Admin tells the story of how she will need a kidney transplant and 3 people from Elevation have offered her one of theirs. Dan, one of the candidates is through testing and will give him one of her kidneys next month. God is at work, I smell Jesus. I love what is happening in our community

Active Ideas for Inactive Devotions

LB.jpg
Here are the creative resources for Quiet Times I spoke about at June 6th's Elevation. Variety is vitality in spiritual practices.

reCONNECTORS – active ideas from the mind of Chuckk Gerwig designed for reconnecting with Jesus in your TWG, prayer time, closet prayer, quiet time, devo time or whatever you like to call it.

1. PYD-"Pray Your Day": Get up 15 minutes early. Make three horizontal columns on a sheet of paper. Head one column with each of the following headings; Wake up until noon - noon to 5 o'clock - 5 o'clock 'till I sleep. Under each time zone list all the classes, events, meetings, work and other activities you'll experience that day. Now take time to pray through your day, asking for God's wisdom, direction, help and protection in the day of life He gave you today. Pray that you will be a good witness to all the people you come in contact with.

Jesus in a Cage?

Non believers in Santa Cruz are hearing about Jesus and I'm stoked. A quote from the attached video... "is it just me or is Jesus bigger than ever around here?" Elevation along with Vintage Faith Church and others are becoming more visible to less-convinced folks in Santa Cruz. This is an EXCELLENT thing, even if folks don't yet believe or understand Jesus - the invisible church is becoming more visible. Here is a clip from a local Santa Cruzan's recent video blog, he no likee Jesus (yet). Todays persecutors are sometimes tomorrows priests, ask that guy named Saul. Good news kids.

Paradise Lost and Found

paradise l & f logo .jpg

There was a slight v i b r a t i o n... the planet broke and paradise was lost. Will it be found again? What happened in that garden? What happens when you die, do you sleep or are you in Heaven awake and lucid? What is Heaven going to be like? What about Hell? We'll explore these questions in less convention Elevation style in our new series: Paradise Lost and Found - Beginning Sunday 21st

Zeitgiest Debunked

the_eye_of_horus2.jpg
Here's a link to a set of videos challenging the Jesus Solar God myth - it's a series of 6 videos talking through the claims of Zeitgiest and other pop culture conspiracy theorists. Here's the link to video pt #1 you can follow through all 6 sessions from HERE

Here is a link to another site that has a variety of articles about the dying rising god myths. Best idea though is if you want to really see how fallacious the claims of Zeitgeist are go to the library and do your own research on these myth gods and the NON parallels, you'll be amazed at the total lack of connection. Jesus stands unique and historic in a world of revisionist history.

reCONNECT

reconnect with tagline.jpg
New Series Alert: reCONNECT : Energizing your Friendship with God - Christianity is all about a relationship with God but how do you have a relationship with someone who is silent and whom you can't see? Why do we feel God is so distant at times? How can we really experience God in a relationship? If you wonder about these things secretly, or have ever felt distant from God stop by, because reCONNECT is about connecting deeply with Jesus. Starts May 10th @ Elevation

Empty Tomb Room

We've been exploring reasons to believe in the resurrection on Sunday nights at Elevation. It's been really cool: lots of new not so churched folks have been first time guests. Tonight our creative Environment Team created a cool "empty tomb" in a side room as a place to reflect on the resurrection of Jesus and take communion. They used masses of crumpled brown paper, small lights some white fabric, candles, incense and the communion elements and created a beautiful space to pray, kneel, remember and rejoice. You guys rock, we're blessed!

The Rising and Postmodern Apologetics

Here's the latest Elevation ad for the local alternative press, The Metro. We're doing a 2 week mini series on The Resurrection of Jesus and inviting our community to come explore it with us as we continue to brand ourself with provocative images and words in the marketplace. A thought: As we think about apologetics sermons in a postmodern age it's probably advisable to move from an old skool academic "proofs" approach to including stories of current lifechange as a part of the belief support. We'll be featuring testimonies of how the Risen Jesus is changing peoples lives in our community today along with the reason and history based defenses, increased visual still media, lots of video clips and an experiential piece.

This morning we had our Easter Sunrise Service. It was great to out in the sunlight , observable to the community around us with the sound of the waves and gulls adding to the worship. What more appropriate place could you worship than in the shade of a lighthouse at daybreak? Pray for our church to be a lighthouse in a dark place. The Conflict Navigator

This Sunday we explored the Art of Self Reflection in Conflict at Elevation. As an application we emailed the whole body a tool that my staff and I wrote to help the body invite God into the process of self evaluation.

An idea we found for saving on wasted printed materials (and more importantly trees) is to send a Constant Contact email flyer of these types of application projects so they arrive during the service and are ready for them to use when they get home. We use Constant Contact for all our E-mailings it looks great, is inexpensive and fast. In fact we've used it to such great extent that we have never yet "postal" mailed anything to our people. Here is the conflict tool, use it if it's helpful to you.

THE CONFLICT NAVIGATOR

First:Pray this Passage

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. - Psalm 139:23-24

Next: Ask yourself and / or Jesus a few questions:

What is the real issue Lord?

What started this problem?

Did I handle the conflict to the best of my ability?

What fighting style have I been using in this conflict?

How has my sarx (the sin nature) shown itself in this conflict?

How have I sinned in this?

What is my role in the solution and resolution?

Have I been absolutely truthful with this person and myself?

Have I retreated from the situation or person and not dealt with the issue fully?

Are words have I spoken to the other person that were unkind or harsh, what were they? Jesus, what do you ask me to do about this?

Jesus, what things would you say to the other person in the conflict if you were me?

Am I harboring contempt or bitterness for this person over another (unaddressed) issue?

How have my actions (overtly or covertly) harmed the other person?

Have I blown the conflict out of proportion and let it cripple / ruin our relationship?

Have I really considered their point of view?

What is their side of the story?

Am I more concerned with 'winning' than loving this person?

What more do I need to do to resolve the conflict / repair the relationship? What would you have me do next Lord?

Now LISTEN: Through the Word:

Ask God to speak to you through his Word and read:

Matthew chapters 5-7 Sermon on the Mount - Ask, “Jesus what do you want me to do, what attitude are you calling me to?”

Read this passage and ask if it is totally true of you in this situation or if you have more reflecting to do

Psalm 119:59 I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes
.

Finally: Plan a time and place to meet with the person about the issue

New Series Starts This Week @ E

Mortal Combat.jpg

I'm stoked on the new series coming to E this weekend! Here's the official blah blah blah yada yada -

We mortals DO combat with each other as natural as breathing. Why is it that friends, relatives, lovers and family find themselves in conflict and discord? How do you manage the "challenging" people in your world? What does the Bible mean when it talks about the "flesh" in a believer's life? How do you learn the Samurai's art of honest self-examination? How do you confront others without all the fireworks, drama, relationship-nuke and pain? Come explore the art of Christ-like confrontation with us at Elevation. Mortal Combat opens this Sunday -March 15th.

On the Gerwig iPod: Steven Wilson - Insurgentes, the new U2 release and a bunch of Black Label Society. AND In my spare time - a friend loaned me his Xbox 360...uh oh time sucker brain eater...

Missional Horizon

cracked.jpg
Much of "evangelism" in the last many years seems to have been riddled with cracks and fissures... questions arise as to how effective they have been... and are...but... Some things are brewing that may have an impact on a world power-walking away from Christendom. A new network of mission-focused and Scripture-centered leaders who desire change is gathering. It's so new it doesn't have a name yet. Dan Kimball and Erwin McManus are two of the cats at the core of it. I'll be looking into it as it unfolds. Check it out here.

Also on the horizon is the Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelism in Cape Town South Africa in 2010, it's going to be a gathering of Christian world leaders seeking how to best move forward in reaching this new world in this new time. The last World Congress in 1974 in many ways set the direction for how the people of that era were reached, this Congress will work on how to effectively reach the people of this time . If you think I should attend this gathering, nominate me by going to this link. No pressure but if you sense I should be part of this let them know. God knows if He wants me there or not - I'm cool either way.

More than all this, more than Congresses, networks, books and sermons... friends, pray for and spend time with people who are unconvinced about Jesus. Change your life to let this happen more this year than last, I beg you on behalf of Jesus. Jesus is savior alone, make Him visible personally, incarnationally, and regularly to your local daily world because the Mission matters and the Mission is you and I this day.

Homeless

Last week I spent some time with a really cool homeless couple. They were seeking shelter from the rains under the overhang of the church and we invited them in for coffee, donuts and some hang time. Neat, neat folks! They shared a lot about how difficult it is living in the bushes around Santa Cruz trying to stay dry, trying to avoid assault and theft, trying to avoid illegal camping violations from the police, and how difficult it is to pull up from a downward spiral of homelessness. They shared how most people tend to treat all homeless as bad guys, drunks and dangerous undesirables to be avoided and I was thinking how easy it is to generalize people. Jesus seemed to be saying how we, His followers need to see all people homeless or housed, though His eyes and that every human being is created in God's image and deserves dignity as his image-bearer

This week I met yet another homeless couple, they and their kids attend Elevation on Sunday nights. I met them after service last Sunday and prayed with them and did some problem solving with them. We also hung out on this Tuesday for an hour or so and God is continuing to speak to me and teach me through my new friends David and Jennifer. They are Christians who lost their home and now travel around living in a travel trailer that they pull behind their van. They park where they can and David looks for work, Jennifer home schools their four kids since they have no steady place to live. God uses us even in poverty- they regularly share the little food they have to feed other homeless people they meet on the street. They pray for folks they meet and share Jesus love with them. They told me of how God shows up over and over to provide for them at just the right time and how God is using them in the lives of other homeless folks. David and Jennifer are glad to share their story and allowed me to share it here but if you meet them at Elevation make sure you give them the ability to just worship in peace and not get mobbed or be treated differently. The Washington Post did a national story, and a 2 minute video about David, Jennifer and the kids --- watch it (below) and take some time to pray for them.

God is teaching me about generosity, faith, and dignity through some wonderful messengers these days.

The times are changing: how should churches reorient themselves to better care for the increasing number of poor and homeless in our midst?

Shalom 2u

Kudos to the creative crew and Omar the Magnificent Carpenter who made the new multi-screen off the chain psychedelic set for the new series - it was a visual cosmic wonderland! We'll upload some live pictures here soon.

tiny.jpg

Some folks wanted the passages from tonight's message on Experiencing Shalom. Here they are:

Psalm 29:10-11 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.

Phillipians 4: 6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace for you alone of Lord make me dwell in safety

Psalm 34:13 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Mark 6:31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

The Experience

The Experience - a new Elevation series starts tonight.

small.jpg

The 1960's hippie generation held some groovy ideals like: Peace Joy Kindness Serving Others

Guess what...Jesus valued these ideals too! The Experience will explore the cosmic question how do you EXPERIENCE quality things in daily life? How do we get the groovy life Jesus intends? Come be encouraged and dig our funky psychedelic themed new series.

Catalyst Roadtrip

roadtrip08.jpg

Catalyst is a next gen leaders conference and ministry. Some of the Elevation crew will be at the Catalyst Westcoast Conference this year, if you attend make sure we get together there and hang!

The Catalyst folks are doing something unique... they have one of their guys traveling around the country in the VW van you see above talking to leaders of next gen churches on The Catalyst Roadtrip. LV has been driving the van around the country for the last YEAR talking with leaders and ended up crashing at my house last week. The next morning we drove down to Santa Cruz and had a coffee gathering with some local next gen rogue ministry leaders at the Abbey.

It was a cool time of talking about the changes happening in ministry and how many of us are serving in less traditional ways. Here's a link to some quotes from our pow-wow

Elevation Offering

td.jpg

I love Santa Cruz folks, they are a wacky bunch. Case in point #1 these Troll Dolls, custom fitted with crosses, clerical robes and collars were found in the offering "plates". They had the names Chuckk and Omar written on their collars. This was a unique Santa Cruz-y offering.

Case in point #2 a visitor in his mid fifties arrived at the service wearing a blinking rudolph red nose (weeks after Christmas) which he kept on for a good part of the service. He arrived through the backdoor mid service and knocked over a bunch of candle stands - the woman with him said " I can't take him anywhere', as his electric nose toy blinked on and off. There's always something interesting happening at church in Santa Cruz and I'm glad we're a church for everyone.

What The???

An old old Tv show used to say "you got some splainin' to do Lucy". After the bad behavior of so many Christians and Christian leaders and some hard questions about God a postmodern world says... you got some splainin' to do Church. Our next Elevation series is titled "WHAT THE??? - Four Questions about Christians and their God". It's less an apologetic and more and exploration of what can be known about Hypocrisy, Evil, Suffering and the divinity claims of Jesus. Here we go!

The 7 Day Sex Challenge

sex jpg.jpg

I got a kick out of this, it's a great idea. Pastor Ed Young's married couples have been given a 7 day sex challenge from the pulpit... I'm thinking we need to borrow this idea when we do a series on sex and marriage. Read all about it in the New York Times

On the iPod: David Bowie - Heroes

Prayer request update: I just left the hospital- Mel is recovering and should be home Friday, keep praying for a full recovery and for God to heal her of Lupus. Tim is in recovery, it was not a bleed as hoped, it was a regrowth of the original problem on his brain stem. If they wouldn't have gotten in quick it would have been fatal. Doctors say he will likely recover fully but he has at least 6 months of very serious rehab to get there, keep praying!

FaceStorming

fb.jpg

I'm really blessed to work with a core team of really creative people, thank you Jesus! We gather in rooms with regularity to scheme visuals, audibles, web-ibes, teach-ibles, interact-ibles, stupid-ibles and such. But what if we were 10 times our size as a creative crew? What if there were potentially hundreds of people brainstorming on a concept? We can be. Enter "FaceStorming".

I tried out an idea I had this week that I'll call FaceStorming. I used my status update on Facebook to ask a question I had for input of creative ideas for this Sunday's message. Within an hour about 10 people had responded with some great stuff and even more ideas came in through F-book and email later in the day. So here's the idea, if you are brainstorming say, movie clips for a topic, series title ideas, books to study for a series, songs or lyrics that speak about a subject etc etc why not ask on your status update and let the larger cyber community around you lend their hearts and minds. We're smarter together than you or I are in isolation.

Portable Podcasts

iphone3g.jpg

Here's yet another reason why you NEED an iPhone for Christmas. The new iPhone 2.2 software allows you to go directly to the iTunes store and get free podcasts and listen to them instantly, directly on your iPhone. Better yet, if a ministry has a video podcast you can stream it on your iPhone instantly and watch it without any download time.

To get to the Elevation podcasts on your iPhone (or computer) turn on iTunes app and search for "Elevation Santa Cruz" or search for "Chuckk Gerwig". Thanks to the wonderful Melissa Boose, every week's Elevation audio podcast is now up on iTunes by Wednesday at 5:00pm, you can totally depend on it.

Also in the news: if you're local pick up a copy of the local alternative rag The METRO, we're running some less conventional ads in there every other week to make Elevation visible to the unchurched, unconvinced, unJesus-loving Santa Cruzers that we pulse for. This week's ad has a less than nice-clean-white-Rockwell-holiday-cheerly alternative Christmas vibe: Christmas sux for sooo many people.

This Sunday will be an ultra interactive multi-sensory service at Elevation with some writing, a little open mic discussion, some video, Twitter on screen interaction, a Peter Gabriel loop, and a heart defibrillator...I've always wanted to try one of those out...

The Blues Brothers

Before the maddness started tonight the room looked like this during set up...

jake blues small.jpg

Tonight at Elevation we had a Blues Brothers "we're on a mission from God" vibe going. We had video clips leading into live music performances and even had this lifesize plaster Jake Blues figure mid-room (an amazing find by elevator Nicole McCullom!). We ended the night with the film intro to the live concert on video and then Omar and I came out in Fedoras , shades and played "Riding with the King" (the BB King, Clapton version) with the great Elevation worship band. The night ended with some old school Reverend Gary Davis blues records playing as everyone ambled off to AfterHours. Twas a fun night of multimedia madness, mission and M&M's (see 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 for how the 2 - m's fit into the scheme). Church can be fun if you let it be! One college gal brought her mom tonight for the first time. Her mom quipped I've not smiled in church so much in a long time. Me neither.

Over the last few months we've battled some huge gremlins while trying to update the Elevation sermons online. We've recently killed the gremlins and the Elevation podcasts are now fully up to date and the complete JUNK series is now online for the first time.

Our new and revamped podcast page will allow you to listen in on your computer, download messages or subscribe (for free) at iTunes and every week's message will now be available online by Wednesday at 6pm. Pulse

This Sunday we start a new series at Elevation called PULSE. Here's the promo-speak: What makes God's heart BEAT? What has God been up to in history? How do we align our pulse to beat with His and live an uncommon life that really matters?

Join me as we explore Jesus' missional heart for the crazy world we inhabit. Join us for all the fun with Jake 'n Elwood..., certain Pink Floyd references, Omar's electric worship sets, heartfelt community, authenticity, grace and all the weirdness that is Elevation. Gene Gerwig : Unstoppable

chuckk n dad small.JPG

Last night my dad guest spoke with me at Elevation. He shared the story of his world rocking car accident / fire and the joy-filled life he's lived since, it was excellent. It was amazing to hear him sit and tell a room of 159 people how he'd never change his life a bit even the accident because God used it for good.

We'll have the audio podcast and probably the VIDEO of the service available within a month. I'll write and entry about it when it's all up online. Sorry the podcasts are behind a bit- we're changing our podcasting and website set up right now. The Shazam series is now currently up to date online but JUNK is not up yet.

Got The Life

This weekend should be an interesting one: I've got a screaming sinus and throat infection, my dad's coming to guest speak at Elevation with me on Sunday (see the post below this one), Andrea's Dad and some other dear friends are coming up from So Cal to stay the weekend and I'm just heading out with Stratocaster in hand to play guitar at Fin's with Omar- next week we play at Margaritaville. It's never boring 'round here.

My Dad

This Sunday will be a really special night at Elevation. My father, Gene Gerwig will be joining me in sharing how we can live with joy when life's circumstances hand us JUNK. My dad knows a LOT about this because in his early 20's he was in a devastating car fire that caused the loss of both his arms, an eye, an ear and left him severely disfigured for life. He got some junk handed to him yet my Dad has THRIVED and lived an awesome happy life. Gene is guy with a great sense of humor, a highly positive outlook and an amazing story. He's a guy worth hearing from, come join us and meet a unique, funny, unforgettable dude.

Elevation Beach Bonfire

f.jpg

Tonight after the Elevation service ends we'll have a wonderful beach bonfire for our community from 8:00pm - 9:59pm on Seabright Beach. It will be a special Elevation Afterhours. AfterHours has been such a great community builder @ Elevation. It's amazing to see 30, 40, 50, 60, and even 70+ of us show up at Woodstock Pizza to hang and BE together after the service every week. It makes us more than just a church service -it makes us a crew. Building community through an ongoing and regularly scheduled set of relational gatherings and happenings has been part of the Elevation Dream from the start and it's happening well.

We'll have a bus ready to wisk you off to beautiful Seabright Beach for a fun Elevation bonfire right after the service. We'll have maps available too in case you want to drive yourself. We'll have FIRE, hotdogs and sodas for $1, FIRE, moonlight n seasounds, FIRE, good company and FIRE too.

Bring a jacket, a blanket and also BRING someone with you tonight that hasn't visited Elevation yet - let's continue to be a community of invitation. Promotion is secondary to invitation, and invitation is secondary to putting someone in your car with you!

We also went to Carly's last high school parents night, hung out with some old friends, rode Harleys to wonderful San Francisco and back down the foggy coast and now are starting up for another glorious week of sleep deprivation and adrenaline soaked Kingdom fun.

The New Series at Elevation

117.jpg

This Sunday we start our new series - JunK: Putting Away Your Past. All of us have some "Junk"... stuff we've done to ourselves and others, stuff others have done to us and bad circumstances that just found their way into our story. How do we put away the negative self talk, how do we forgive others fully and get on with life, how do we live with real joy when our history is filled with regrets and bummers?

JunK is an exploration of living well, beyond the junkyard. This series isn't a morose contemplation on things past but a joyful hope-filled trip into the life Jesus intends for us.

Come and bring a friend along who may have a little junk of their own.

Cowboy Church: Week #2 at the Ranch

YEEEE HAWWW PARDNERS (that's Maranatha in cowboy I think)

Cowboy Chuckk checking in with an update from the Ranch. This Sunday morning was a blessing at Cowboy Church. We had all 12 people from last week show up again and 5 new people joined us for the first time this Sunday morning so we've grown to 17 people, 4 horses and 1 French Poodle so far. People are really enthusiastic when we gather, it's a blast.

CowboyChurch week 2.jpg

We had a great time of fellowship, Word and Worship under the Redwoods. Here's an email excerpt from David our ministry partner and the owner of the ranch we meet at:

Hey Chuck and Omar, Thanks so much for serving at the Outdoor Church Today. Today was a home run…We had quite a few new people and about 1/3rd of the people were not Christians and I’m pretty sure don’t attend church. Most people took the New Testatments we handed out with the words for the Praise Songs. Quite a diverse group. Some yuppies, a Buddist, a Jewish Gentleman and other wonderful folks. GOD was at work today.Blessings and thanks for the honor of serving with you. Hope you enjoy the pictures. With great respect. David De La Rosa

As I was leaving I got a big hug from the Buddhist lady who had visited and she said let's hang out and chat some next week after the service. Next week a group of folks are riding up the trails to join us for church too. Send up a prayer for the Cowboy Church folks.

Cowboy Church

ranch church 2.jpg

Yiiihaa!!! Yesterday morning Omar and I tried out something new in multisite ministry. We led "Cowboy Church" under the open sky in the shade of the redwoods on a ranch high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Ever since I arrived up here I've been thinking we should have a gathering outdoors for the active outdoor people in this area. There are folks who wouldn't come into a church building and feel that nature is a better setting for spiritual activity. This beautiful place we live is a cathedral anyway.

A couple of months back a crazyman approached me and said "I have a ranch and want to start a church service outdoors for the mountain bikers, horseback riders, hikers, bikers and others who frequent the trails and roads around my property". After a bit of prayer Omar and I felt Jesus calling us to go do this so we signed up to lead Cowboy Church out on his ranch on Sunday mornings as an experiment this month in addition to our evening services at Elevation. So we're extra tired guys this Monday morning!

Yesterday morning I woke up early and rode my Harley thru the redwoods to the ranch not knowing if anyone at all would show but totally excited to simply obey God and go worship there and preach to whoever did show up. I like taking chances, I like a level of uncertainty: if we only take on ministry ops that seem a safe bet to succeed there's no faith involved. We told our Elevation folks this isn't for you unless you bring a friend who wouldn't come inside a church building to keep it from being just another worship service option for already Christian folks. We had a great time for our first service, 12 people total showed up, the weather was excellent and it was a blast - everyone in attendance loved the service. In the coming weeks there is a horse riding group riding up to tie up their horses to the hitchin' post and come to church under the redwoods, fun stuff. Here's an excerpt from an email from the Ranch's owner.

It was a blessed time and we had a nice turnout but hope for a lot more in the following weeks. The word is just getting out!The fairly liberal Bonny Doon news gave us 2 page ad’s. I’ve already gotten phone calls and emails from people saying they want to attend… including people who don’t normally go to church, several new believers (a guy that painted my house received the Lord and is coming ) some new neighbors just called and asked if it was ok if her husband, a Jewish man could join us… I loved it!!!

We'll continue through this month and stop for the winter and invite anyone who becomes a regular to Elevation or SCBC services. If it seems like we should do this again we'll start up early next summer and run for 4 months, who knows we're just gonna follow Jesus around the ranch and see where He leads. If not we'll cook up another experiment maybe next time we can be like Indians, soldiers, prisoners, or migrant workers instead of Cowbows. Take a moment to pray for Cowboy Church will ya?

Omar and Brett and I are rocking out again this Tuesday the 26th 7:00pm at Finn's Coffee Shop on Ocean St... more songs from john mayer-the police- john cougar -tom petty -elton john -mute math -and a bag full of smiles are on the playlist.

IMPORTANT NOTE: bring a friend who wouldn't come to a church gathering for a cup of coffee and make sure to introduce 'em to Omar and I. Here's another opportunity to live out Incarnationally in the community we love. How can you be the church outside the four walls doing something you love?

GeeTar

Guitar_2.jpg

Tonight was fun. Omar and I and another guitar player friend spent and hour and a half learning a bunch of old rock songs and then went to Finn's in Santa Cruz and played music for the patrons for 2 hours. The highlight was the last 30 minutes of music which we didn't learn or practise until we turned the page and started playing them live for the first time - great fun! People enjoyed the music and that's always a joy.

It was really fun to get out and play for people again - we played songs by John Mayer - Elton John - Switchfoot - Men at Work - Brian Adams - Omar - Tom Petty - The Beatles - Billy Joel - Chris Tomlin - The Police - Kenny Loggins - Otis Redding - Steve Miller - Les Emmerson and John Mellencamp.

Omar and I have had a vision to be out playing music around town to become a part of the local music community. We need to be outside the 4 walls of the church campus to Incarnate and be part of Santa Cruz if we ever hope to reach people who are not followers of Jesus. How can YOU incarnate into YOUR community in greater ways?

Notes of Thanks

Last Sunday we celebrated Elevation's 6 month anniversary as a ministry. Shazam!?

Truth be told I'm not a huge fan of the flaccid children's picture book depictions of Jesus. The late 20th century pop art version of my Great King can be, well, lame. He's either painted as a gentle lamb-carrying pre-hippie or a comic-book superhero with abs o' steel. Jesus is never painted more Disneylicious than when a picture replays one of His world-rocking, mind-bending miracles. The miracles of Jesus deserve closer examination so for our next series at Elevation we're going to dive into the deep NT narrative.

When Jesus breaks the bounds of the natural He leaves powerful insights into who He is and what He is like.

We NOW have the first 2 weeks of the Green series podcasts up on the Elevation website in case you were looking for them. Sorry for the delay.

Green has been a fun and interesting journey: week one I created a live soundscape with audio loops as I taught (which is a handful), I've had to really wrestle with my own lack of Greeness, the ElevationEnvironmentCrew (atmosphere team) made the room look amazing, and the topic has been way more controversial than I expected.

Visual Series Rewinds

E icon green fuzz_2.jpg

Something we've been doing at Elevation that may be worth passing on is Visual Series Rewinds. Like many teams we spend mega-hours each month putting together Keynote visuals for each week's message. We use photo stills, animations, video clips, audio clips and series color branded backgrounds to help our visual learners connect more deeply with Jesus and the teaching. After all that work it's a shame to just file it away like all the cool treasures in the Area 51 warehouse (and yes, I LIKED the new Indiana Jones).

We do this: at the end of each series we take all the best "slides" from all the messages in that series and put them into a single presentation set it to music and play it at the end of the last message in the series. The idea is to help people recall and reconnect the messages in the series as one piece instead of just a bunch of individual thoughts.

Whoo Hoo! -Tonight we start our new series: GREEN.

Green

green blog pic.jpg
The Bible has something to say about this planet and the environment. Churches tend to not talk about environment issues very much, if at all. For some the planet and its ecology isn't a God issue, it's a political party issue. Funny, ever since I mentioned we were doing a series on this I've heard most Christians, joke that I'm a tree-hugger something like that. It's strange how even in a secular world that is very concerned about caring for about God's creation that so many of God's people seem to not care very much or see it as a purely political issue for "nutjobs, hippies and neopagans". For many, part of the non-biblical recent Christian subculture is a mild disdain for people who are concerned about the environment. Here's a thought; how might an Evangelical antigreen vibe become a Wall between the Unconvinced in ultra-green Santa Cruz and our witness of Jesus? I'm not a super green person and I am learning a bit about all this myself but as I study the Bible God is growing me in the issue of caring better for His planet.

As in all things I want to know what God thinks, so our next series: GREEN is a biblical exploration of the earth, humans and the environment. This means a fun series! This issue, like many today needs to be subjected to the Scriptures instead of the popular press, Christian subculture or party politics for explanation. If you're local, bring everyone you know who is green but unconvinced about Jesus, this series will be a unique opportunity for invitation.

GREEN begins June 1st @ Area 51 (The SCBC Student Center / Mothership of all things Elevation).

Talking About Being Free Is One Thing...

This Sunday will conclude our 6 week series FREE an exploration of Christian Freedom. This classic clip from Easy Rider speaks to an issue though... when people start to actually live free... uh oh! --Disclaimer: Even though Dennis Hooper is smoking weed in the clip I am NOT advocating smoking dope (which I don't believe to be a Christian freedom). Why do you think they call it dope? Why can't I remember high school? Anyway, check the clip and chew on it a bit.

Being Visible

As I've said before most churches are virtually invisible to the larger community they are nestled in. I want Elevation to be more visible, so we have a media - vibe - visibility piece playing in the local Theater 9, on all 9 screens 7 times a day for the next 6 months. Here's a very low res and watermarked version of the piece. What are other ways to be more visible?

Pieces of Flair

images.jpeg
Here's an idea. If you lead a church, church plant, church in a church or ostrich wrestling club here's new a way to update your folks. If you have a Facebook account add the Pieces of Flair application to it, design a "button" and send it to your friends with a note updating them about happenings in your community.

Example: tonight at Elevation we are hosting a Harley-Davidson themed evening planned so I made a Piece of Flair with a motorcycle engine on it that matches our screen images for the meeting. I then selected all my Facebook friends that come to Elevation, sent them the Flair and invited them to bring friends who might enjoy a biker -gospel night. I plan to send of Series-Themed Piece of Flair for each new series now. So there it is an idea, for good or evil.

Homer's Chore #1

A worship-pastor friend of mine was musing about how many people that come to one of the services at his church seem to feel like worship is a chore, "one said they like going to that service to get it out of the way for the weekend". Jesus must be PISSED these days. When church gatherings become a chore it is:

A. time for a new church gathering for you

B. time to admit you never really did love Jesus

C. time to reassess heart and move towards God

D. a good thing to just keep attending and prove to the younger folks in the church that it's all b.s. in your opinion

E. a sign that new fresh church gatherings are needed

An Ancient Thought for a Postmodern World

About 100 years or so after Jesus' death the following words were written down by an early Christian and have survived to this day

The Epistle of Mathetes to Diognetus was written somewhere between 130-200 C.E.

—The Relation of Christians to the World.

"To sum up all in one word—what the soul is in the body, that are Christians in the world. The soul is dispersed through all the members of the body, and Christians are scattered through all the cities of the world. The soul dwells in the body, yet is not of the body; and Christians dwell in the world, yet are not of the world."

Chuckk thinks...DISPERSE - INCARNATE - BE Soul-FULL.

We'll, off to Elevation to explore the connection between Romans 6: 1-14, Walt Disney's Pinocchio and the meaning of Trust in The Divine One.

Deeper

headphones with wave form copy.jpg

Studying God's Word "deeper" for many Christians... well sadly it rarely happens. Some churches even offer Bible studies many of which seldom seem to take people much deeper than they would hear in the average sermon. Many Christians who spend a while in church never learn much beyond what they learned in their first 5 years of church attendance. Over the years I've met many people who wish they could learn more and go deeper, some folks have said they wish they could go to seminary to go deeper and grow wider in their understanding of the Bible.

Technology is our friend and this is an amazing time to be alive! Did you know you can audit full seminary courses online and free at that... and free is GOOD! Reformed Theological Seminary is a good school (disclaimer: no I don't consider myself to fully follow a full Reformed theology even though I am in alignment with much that is Reformed) ANYWAY they offer many full Master's degree courses online for free and they can be downloaded to iTunes and listened to on your computer or iPod. Maybe you could gain some seminary level education during your daily commute...or during your backyard cigar sabbath time... or during your daily run?

Download the wonderful RTS courses at iTunes or get started at the Reformed Theological Seminary website if you are iTunes challenged. I'm currently taking their course on church history as a brush up and it is AMAZING ( I just listened to 4 classes in one sitting. Go deeper.

Lasers n' Fog

Last Night we had a great time at Elevation. Kenny Green and his crew from LUMINA lighting blessed us by bringing over some wild lasers and foggers and turned our worship space into a unique place to hang out with Jesus. Kenny you rock buddy thanks!

DSC_0127.JPG

The room was alive with lasers, extra l.e.d. lighting, mucho fog and the people were alive with interactive worship: dropping sin stones in water, writing words of thanks on the video screens, taking communion, meeting with the prayer team to share needs and reading Psalms into a live mic over a warm sonic backdrop. Omar and the band led us into everything from loud rocking songs (watching about 120 people physically spin around during Marvelous Light is something to see) to gentle reflective pieces like Heart of Worship. As usual, a ton of us mobbed Woodstock Pizza for community afterwards.

I'm starting on this weeks next series launch right now; "Free" : Balancing Christian Freedom With Responsibility. Should be fun!

Visibility

tea.jpg
Most churches are invisible to folks who aren't already churched...

A few years back a friend of mine, who is now with Jesus mentioned what a good idea it would be to make one of those theater ads, you know, the ones that run between the movies at theaters... for a church. My pal Dan Snow always had great ideas about how to let not so convinced folks know about what Jesus was up to. Man! I miss Dan.

So we're doing one for ya Dan. Elevation will have a multimedia ad at the local Theater 9 in Downtown Santa Cruz. The ad will run on all 9 screens 7x a day everyday for the next 6 months in the hope that we'll let a lot of folks who don't do church know what we're up to, and yes it will have that Elevation vibe... If you're local keep your eyes open at the theaters in May as the summer blockbusters start hitting the screens.

I'm fascinated that most churches "advertise" only in places where Christian people look like Christian radio, newspaper religion sections and the phonebook. I am committed to making us visible to the eyes of folks who aren't especially looking for a church.

Good Friday, Picollos n Harleys

Denmark 2007 (25).JPG
This Friday is Good Friday. This FRIDAY will be this week's OFFICIAL Elevation worship gathering INSTEAD OF Sunday night. We'll gather with the whole scbc body in the main auditorium, I'll bring the message, Omar will co-lead the worship, there will be a choir (even though me no likee chiors so much) and a small orchestra. I hope there's a piccolo in the orchestra, I'm not sure why but I hope there is. We should be kind to piccolo players I'll bet most got the snot kicked out of them in high school and now know jujitsu as a secret weapon... Anyway, this should be a unique evening for us all. Services will be at 5pm and again at 7pm

In other important news my partner in crime, worship guru Omar Spence finally ended his 18 year sabbath from motorcycling and bought a cool black Harley Night Train yesterday - so we are now the official biker pastor duo. Elevation is biker-friendly and non-denominational, even KawaSuzukaHondahas are welcome, let's celebrate diversity with grace.

yellowdog tongue_2.jpg
Free is good, free is a nice thing indeed, free is ...well almost nothing in Santa Cruz other than the disc golf course. BUT::: "Free" is the next series at Elevation, (coming next month). Free: the series will be an exploration of Christian freedom and responsibility; are we free to repetitively sin and be forgiven without guilt? Are we free to drink, smoke, kiss labradors on the mouth (see pic above), and eat rancid ceviche from an old tire laying on Seabright Beach? What does it really mean to "stumble a brother or sister" and how do we avoid this? How do we live free while pursuing holiness and living a life that makes Jesus get smile lines on His wonderful face? Come see.

Why Should We Even Bother To Attend A Church Gathering?

Italy (24).JPG

I just heard the best message I've ever heard on why church gatherings are worth getting up for. Listen in online to this great podcast: "Why do we go to church?" from a great preacher, Morris Proctor

Other news, my friend and partner in ministry, SCBC Executive Pastor Mark Schwenne will be leaving our staff as the Elders feel our church can't support an executive pastor position at the size we've become. Mark will be answering God's call to seek a place where he can be an Executive Pastor elsewhere.

Pray for SCBC as we journey through another big staff loss! Pray for my pal Mark as he heads out into uncharted waters. In the meantime, why go to church??? Listen in to Morris on the subject!

Why Does God Feel So Distant Sometimes?

Treo_022908_012.jpg

We start a new series THIS Sunday I'm stoked on it! This Sunday Ill be exploring some of the reasons God feels so distant sometimes. Anyway, here's the official new series blurb.

“The Wall: demolishing the barriers betweens ourselves, God and others.”

We all have barriers that get in the way of deep, honest, intimate relationships with our families, friends, God and the unconvinced. Join us at Elevation as we explore how to tear down the walls that separate us from others. Expect gratuitous Pink Floyd references, exposition of God’s Holy Word and the usual mixture of humor, honesty, the unexpected and kickin’ high energy worship.

The New Protestant Diaspora

Guess what? Protestant flavored Christianity is on the decline, (insert fake gasp)who would have guessed?!?... Are we paying attention yet? The stats are consistently showing what the "seat of the pants" and vote "with their feet" polls have been suggesting for years. Read all about it HERE.

If what we're doing isn't engaging folks in this postmodern age it may be time to smell the shade grown freetrade coffee and re-enculture our forms to connect with people. Timeless truth doesn't change but time-based worship forms and culture based traditions must.

It's an EXCITING time to be in ministry, charge friends, seize the day for the Kingdom of the Great One! Join the HolyExperiment of this 21st century.

Resignation

Today Dean Bouzeos, Senior Pastor @ SCBC resigned. Dean is an excellent honorable man of God's Word and Spirit. I'll miss his encouragement in my life and ministry. There will be an interesting period of change going on at SCBC, pray along with me for God to show Himself as He is - GREAT!
Tonight at Elevation I'll be sharing a special message on how we, as one body heal, grow and even thrive in this new season at SCBC. God is doing something unique so come listen, worship and begin to heal with us. No spin no pep talk just an honest to goodness pastor's heart filled with hope and trust in the excellent God I serve.
Tomorrow night @ 6pm there will be an all-church huddle where the Elders will give us some more detail on where God is leading.

Elevation Tattoo Series Environment

Chuckk at Elevation smaller.JPG

The Official Elevation Launch last Sunday was a blessing and a blast. Omar and the band rocked so hard it knocked the porcelain off the potties in the adjacent bathrooms! Worship happened, people were engaged in the teaching time and there were lots of good vibes, smiles and nods. 167 people turned out for the evening. 26 people came out afterwards for AfterHours to spend some post service time together.

Andrea and her environment team made the tattoo parlor inspired big red environment wonderful. They even went so far as to spray green-soap in the air to give the room the smell of a tattoo parlor as people arrived.

You can hear the message Tattoo: Marked for Life - Marked By Jesus at the Elevation website (we'll have every week's teaching online there and at iTunes). You can get to our site at www.elevationSC.org - look under Media. Also check out the skimboard photo art of Kerry Carpenter in our Media tab.

BUMMER, this week some alien robots from Pluto ( which is evidently not a planet anymore) introduced distortion into our sacred recording devices, it's still listenable but parts are distorted a bit. We will kill all alien robots this Sunday.

This week's message: Jesus, Marked by us...

The Missing Piece in Church Community is ... Community

The missing link in most Christian communities is…COMMUNITY.

• In our light-speed mach5 world it’s difficult to find time to just chill with others

.• It’s hard to get to know people in a church because most church services don’t have tons of space for hanging out and talking to other humans.

• Once a church community gets fairly big it’s really hard to get a chance to ask the pastor and worship leader questions or even to get to know them.

• There’s not enough laughter, smiles and play in the world.

• Most gatherings of Christians happen on church campuses or in private homes where people who aren’t Christian can never see how Christian community looks and feels. Christians enjoying life together in public places is a winsome thing indeed!

SO: Every week after Elevation Worship Services end at 8pm I, Worship Lead; Omar Spence and other Elevators will be going out on the town (‘cause our town ROCKS)!

We’ll be chillin’ with anyone and everyone who wants a bite to eat, something to drink, wants to find out how to get involved at Elevation or wants to get to know others in our Elevation community. Maybe you would like to discuss the sermon, or wonder what we believe or why we do what we do. Afterhours is your place to ask questions, make comments, give us input and more that that - make some friends.

Most AfterHours shindigs will happen out on the town so we can comfortably invite others into the fun and where not yet Christian folks can observe Christians having a great time together. For people with kids some in home AfterHours hang-times may crop up to better serve families.

If you;re attending elevation : Live a little, laugh more, become part of Elevation - come to AfterHours. Remember, getting your homework done or getting to work feeling fresh on Monday morning are both highly overrated!

THE BIG Elevation LAUNCH This Sunday

Here we go.

We launch into weekly services at Elevation THIS SUNDAY 6:30-8pm in Area 51 (the Santa Cruz Bible Church Student Center). If you're local come celebrate with us at the beginning of the chaos.

Come visit our tattoo-parlor themed worship space and hear about the indelible agape of the Master. The brownie bar is being baked, the coffee is being brewed, and there will be signups for our LOST Parties... hmmm what's that??? ...happening next week in the four East Santa Cruz, West Santa Cruz, Felton and Scotts Valley locations.

We'll be going out to pizza later for AfterHours community building time.

Pray for us as we endeavor to love, worship, laugh, pray and engage this town in fresh ways.

One Week And Counting

We officially launch Elevation - one week from tomorrow. After next Sunday I'll be back into weekly teaching ministry again. I realize that much of my joy and ministry-energy comes from the weekly task of spending time with Jesus in His Word preparing to communicate it to the Body and then coming on Sunday to share what He said to me during the week. I am wired for this and feel His joy when I am doing this. I haven't had the privilege and duty of weekly teaching since September so this will be good for the soul!

Prayer Answered: We needed a part time Administrative Assistant for Elevation and one of our Core-Dreamers; Melissa Boose has been hired to fill the role! Melissa is a wonderful gifted minister with a great heart and sweet personality, Elevation is doubly blessed to have her! Thanks to God for every good and perfect gift!

Pray for the Spences , the Booses and the Gerwigs as we prepare for launch, the enemy has been very active in making our lives very difficult as we start this new dealio! Something is brewing.

Santa Is Real, Because I Am He!

Heart of Omar

Here is a letter our new elevation Worship Arts Director, Omar Spence wrote to his friends regarding his move into Area 51 / Elevation... feel his Kardia.

Dear friends and family, I am writing to let you all know what God is up to with me. I apologize in advance for the length of this letter, but those of you who know me know I am usually only long winded in person. Please understand the importance of this letter to me and my family and please forward this to anyone you feel may need to hear this or that can pray for me and my family. I have been "called" to a new adventure serving my Savior, Jesus Christ in full-time ministry with the church family at Santa Cruz Bible Church. For the last eight years the Lord has given my heart an incredible desire to use my musical gifts in His church to glorify His name (actually about 12 years if you consider "drumming" to be a musical gift...most do not!). What a tremendous journey it has been. Having been encouraged to live "the great adventure" by guys like Chip Ingram, Steve Clifford, Tom Randall, Tim Beverly, and being hounded (in love) by one of my best friends, Paul Sampson, who would not relent on telling me that this was something God had created me to do??? I thought he was flat out crazy! Anyone who has a similar background would think the same...how could God use me? My prayer is that this letter would be an encouragement to anyone struggling with that thought. All of us have been created by God and have been specifically gifted by Him to be used for His purposes. And yet all of us are sinners. Do not be afraid. Don't do what I did for so long, delaying God's will for me, out of fear of failure. God does not give us the spirit of fear. If by faith we take the opportunities in baby steps God promises to show up. He says, "come unto me like a child!" Fully dependent on Him!

Things really started to change for our family about two and a half years ago when we visited Calvary Chapel of Santa Cruz. I was so blessed. So many cool things about this church in it's simplicity just blew my mind. We were reminded of how deep and inexhaustible God's word is. To realize again the importance of the study of His word and that it is all there (OT & NT) for a reason! I fell in love with the Word of God again, but I realized that I was not exercising my gifts for God there, just being fed. I was concerned and began praying about this, I had forgotten what it was like to go to church and not serve God. It didn't feel right and I began to question whether or not this is where God had called us to serve. In a circumstantial situation only God could create, the worship pastor at Calvary was suddenly challenged to care for his father with Alzheimer's and immediately had to adjust his priorities and his commitment to leading worship to honor his earthly father. The opportunity to lead worship was presented to me, and that's when I really knew the Lord was definitely calling me to serve Him this way. It has been a blast to be in the center of God's will serving in the exact position in the body that I was designed for. Not that I did it all right, I failed regularly, but what a joy to see people affirm you in what God created you for. The recent turn of events this last couple of months and the decisions we have been faced with have been so hard for us as a family. Dave Johnston is not only one of the best communicators and teaching pastors I have ever been blessed to serve with but, he has discipled and absolutely surrounded himself with an entire team of "awesome" teachers. Whenever he couldn't preach (which was not very often) it seemed like any other pastor who stood up to teach was also a phenomenal teacher of the scriptures. Most of them have never been to seminary! (ouch) I have never felt so equally yoked with so many people in such a small church before (especially my pastor) and was content to serve there
as long as the Lord would allow. (learned that line from Chip!) Pastor Dave has great vision, and I am learning that I love men who are visionary and have an agenda for God! I am fairly simple in my vision. Since accepting Christ as my Savior and watching Him transform my life, I love seeing people get saved. I long to be available to tell people about Jesus anywhere I am, or to be any part of any outreach designed to see people open up their hearts to God and believe Jesus died for their sins. One of the hardest things for me to do as a lead worshipper is sing a song after people have prayed the sinners paryer...I'm a mess. Since coming to Calvary a few years ago Pastor Dave has encouraged us to pray fervently for the lost in Santa Cruz County. That has been my passion for years.

More recently, God has placed a tremendous burden on my heart for real unity in the bible teaching churches in our area. Not just saying it with our lips, but living it by our works. We need to pray for each other, and reach out to one another when we are in times of need, and to really serve God as "one" church. Like the apostle Paul did when he traveled between churches, always unifying them, bringing gifts or money to a church in need from another church that was in abundance. It is crucial for the churches in Santa Cruz to be supportive of each other, not tearing each other down. Now I see God giving me a burden and a purpose! What an awesome season of growth for me!

In June of this year a very close friend of mine told me about a "missional" vision God had given Him for reaching out to Santa Cruz and truly seeing Santa Cruz as a mission field! (red flag # 1 = guy in Santa Cruz with a vision). I had never really thought of Santa Cruz in that way, I thought the mission field was in Mexico, Philippines, India, Africa, China...or somewhere far away. I just began praying for him, his family, and about how (maybe) I could somehow be a part of what he was up to, until months passed. Chuckk Gerwig if you don't know him, is a phenomenally crazy, guitar shredding, Harley riding, monster of a bible teacher like few men God has created. You can fill a website with what this dood has been up to , and he has, www.sacreddigital.com <
http://www.sacreddigital.com/> . His visionary and missional thinking penetrated me, and caused me to look at what he was up to. I began meeting with him regularly to see what the progress of God's new ministry was. The Holy Spirit took over from there. God has been at every junction of this process, because frankly I wasn't interested in going anywhere. When I learned of Chuckk needing a full-time worship pastor to make this church service happen, I thought, "well God, it is on Sunday nights, so I could still serve at Calvary on Wednesday nights and Sunday morning then go to work full time with Chuckk and serve with him on Sunday evening?!!!" God was tugging on my heart but I avoided saying too much to anyone anything until I spent time with God and finally prayed and fasted. I felt God telling me to take the next step and actually applied for the position in October. This was the point when the reality that things might be changing came. I called Pastor Dave and let him know, and he was so supportive and loving. I got all the emotions, nervous, scared, doubtful of my calling, but I just kept pressing into God through His Word and through prayer. Throughout the scriptures God is so consistent, but for some reason we let our humanity to trick us into thinking that we should find a place, make it nice and comfortable, and serve God in a way that works out well for us. All of the scriptures reveal the exact opposite! How comfortable was it for Jesus, or for any of His followers in the Bible? When He told the disciples to go ye therefore unto all the nations and share the Good News, He knew they would be martyred. He absolutely did not mean for us to sit on our butts waiting for people to come to us, or to our church so we can "bless" them. People are going to hell not knowing that I am their neighbor, and I know the cure for sin, it's Jesus. I need to challenge myself daily, am I really doing all I can? We (the church) need to be all about getting outside the walls of the church, going into Matthews house (the world) and making relationships with people, showing them Gods loving-kindness so that they would see Christ living in us. To see people receive salvation. That is what Christ has called me to do, and no, I have not done it too well. I have friends that I am afraid to talk to sometimes, mainly because I don't want to say the wrong thing. But I beg God to help me, to teach me how to listen to His voice when He tells me to talk to someone, or reach out to someone, to love someone, or hug someone? Or maybe to go and serve him in another location that looks impossible, but might glorify Him more. All things are possible through Christ who strengthens me. Living for Jesus is sometimes hard, but it's way harder living without Him, trust me I tried it. When I am prayed up and prepared and it feels like God's Spirit is flowing through me, and we hit a home run, get it right on, and people are changed, and He is given the glory, there is nothing greater! I'm hooked!

I have a long way to go to be anything great for God, but He has opened a door for me to grow in the art of worshiping Him as a full-time lead worshiper at one of the greatest churches in Santa Cruz! To hopefully bring much fruit to His kingdom. This truly is the next step for me in "God's great adventure". I know again that peace that surpasses all understanding having been approved for this position, but the days ahead are going to be difficult, please remember me and my family in your prayers...and know I do not ask for this often, for my family yes, but not for me. I need your help.

love, your bro in Him...Omar

We have just hired a full time worship director for Elevation: the amazing Omar Spence! Omar is a Santa Cruz local, a great musician and leader, a sold -out-for-Jesus guy who is anointed for worship, and a good buddy to boot! Funny, after looking at 80 resumes from all over the States, talking to bunches of excellent worship guys and praying like crazy the perfect man was right here in Santa Cruz!

Square Peg Round Hole

------After watching the video chew on this: How is the Christian SUBCULTURE (not the scriptures, faith or doctrine) like the round hole and the non-Christian person thought of like a square peg in some churches? How do many churches try to "saw off" the cultural edges of people so they fit socially in the Christian subcluture? How's that been going? We can never give up the faith, doctrine, holiness or truth but we must let go of our post biblical 20th century subcultural traditions or we will end up far from a place in society where we can be salt, light and blessing.

Vintage Faith Church

Dan Kimball's father passed away last week, keep Dan and his family in your prayers! Josh and Dan asked me to fill in preaching at Vintage Faith Church yesterday as Dan tended to his father's funeral. It was a blessing and a privilege.

God is doing great things at VFC. My buddy the anointed and wildly good looking Josh Fox led worship - it was really passionate and exciting. The room was packed to overflowing with people in their 20's and early 30's and God's presence and pleasure was obvious. It is always encouraging to preach into the lives of really receptive young people. I can't wait to get going with Elevation gatherings, it really energized me to to be at VFC.

Keep November 11th open for our Elevation TestDrive 6:30-8pm in the Santa Cruz Bible Church Student Center -we're getting a bunch of the long overdue very very cool lighting fixes done, we're putting in 3 more video projectors and FINALLY turning the Student Center into a non distracting and well designed space for people to meet with God. Visiting

This last week was great. Andrea and I drove down to Southern California to visit churches, friends and family. We had the real privilege of visiting our last church and dropping into see some of our old students lead the evening service for their first time. We ended up staying up late afterwards hanging out with everyone, priceless. The next morning we went big-time church visiting.

We visited Rock Harbor in Costa Mesa for one of the best worship services I've ever attended - great message, powerful worship, nice atmosphere. We then went to the Sharp Club for another RH service. We hit the Grove and Farmer's Market in between services. We finally stopped in at Erin McManus' Mosaic at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles before munching a killer Korean BBQ dinner in Korea Town.

Visiting churches with a teachable heart is helpful in the process of discerning what kind of expression you'd like to engineer.

TRACTION

We are finally getting some real TRACTION at elevation!

We have killed most all of the computer / server gremlins (die cyber-scum!) - we have finalized my switch from PC back to Mac, we are finalizing the cleanup on the logo - we have a database set up - we got the first mailing out -we have some cool video being filmed for the first TestDrive service (Nov. 11) -we have national ads out to find God's BEST Worship Arts Pastor (we've had 27 responses so far) - We've visited 6 great churches to humbly listen, watch, worship and learn. Traction!

Traction = forward movement, momentum will develop until we reach full escape velocity.

Last Day

Today is my last day as a"professional" youth pastor. The last 24 years have been consumed with high school students and their world, it's been really fun!

This weekend I officiated at a wedding for one of my old students from 15 years ago. Much of that core group of old "kids" were there ( they are now all around their 30's), we reminisced for hours about the wonderful life and ministry we shared together years ago. Many of them are key volunteer ministers and a few are vocational ministers now, what a blessing. God provides just the right conclusions to life chapters. Thank you Jesus - life if GOOD!

Tomorrow starts a new chapter, Elevation. I'm on stoked.

We had so many great submissions that we are going to keep them all and use them as special headers and other publication pieces when the official logo isn't necessary.

Again thanks to all the talented artists who submitted such great work!

How Do You Think Of Jesus? AND...a Lesson On How Not to Pray

How do you "like to think of Jesus"?  It's vital that we see Him as He is and not as we wish He is- here's a great video clip for a sermon and some personal reflection.

I'm off to Lake Tahoe for our annual SCBC staff retreat tomorrow - fellowship Jetskis and fun.  It will be fun to get away with Andrea for a few days; we'll ride the Harley up and back which will make for a nice long ride together.  I love my wife and going riding together is a special time

Airports... and Church Gatherings

chair

I was in a couple of airports last week.  Airports are strange; if you travel alone, even though you are surrounded  by throngs of people there is a  certain loneliness.

Loneliness in a crowd is a sad thing.

For many folks coming to church services or visiting a church is a "lonely in a crowd" experience, they come in sit alone, are un-recognized, un-embraced, alone  -in a crowd.  There is usually a cold empty seat or two between them and the other people in the room - the 14" gap of sadness.

A friend of mine mentioned that she recently visited a new church and felt "like she had been invited to someone's home for a meal and was then completely ignored".

Promotion minus hospitality = loneliness in the pews.

How could this be different?   ...begins with One

Big News : Forward Thrust

chuckk in the 80s

Here's me in the Big Hair 80's, cute huh?  At the moment they shot this picture I was NOT thinking "hey one day I wanna be an agent of change by engineering and pastoring a 21st ministry".  Who woulda guessed?

Anyway...We have Thrust!

Here's the big news: God has brought us a new Student Ministries Pastor, Allen Coleman.  This prayer saturated search was completed in just a few months by God's Grace - further confirming my move into Elevation.  The locating and hiring of a new Student Ministry Pastor was a KEY event in starting the countdown to the official Elevation Launch because until we located and hired the right man I have been committed to giving my all in Student Ministry.   A long search would have greatly hindered Elevation's launch.  Allen will start October 1, this means I will be able to gain traction on Elevation planning and prep this month and will be the Full Time Pastor of Elevation in less than 30 days allowing me to focus every moment on more Thrust

Current next steps are: I will be continuing to interview possible Elevation worship pastors, write job descriptions for the worship pastor and admin positions and will be getting the Student Center technology upgrades finished as I also transition the Youth Ministry.  I'll also be on staff retreat for a few days this month and be taking some vacation time to rest up after the wild summer of events and missions.

Plan on a late October Elevation Sunday night preview service (date TBA), we'll also have one preview service in November and another in December.  I plan to have Elevation fully launched with weekly services in January, God willing (and Worship Pastor arriving).

Keep your eye on this site for info on what's next for Elevation and how you can get involved.

Thrust

Big news coming this weekend regarding a huge step forward for the Elevation launch.  We have some cool new Thrust.  Check back in a couple of days for a big update.

BTW: HUMIDITY SUCKS... but Alabama is very nice.

In The Air Again

ls

Tomorrow I head  off to Alabama, "where the skies are so blue" to visit the Right Reverend Andy Wulff,  David Thew (Church in a Brewery) and their ministry friends.  If I see Neil Young I'll remind him that evidently "a Southern man don't need him around anyhow".

ELEVATION NEWS: A key event will be the hiring my replacement in youth ministry ---guess what? ...we have some GREAT guys in the pipe right now.  When we find and hire the right man, I'll be a full time Elevat-or!  Forward movement is happening !!!  ALSO:  If you have a logo you haven't submitted yet shoot it on over. Things will be gaining speed in September.

Doing Justice

justice

Jesus loves the poor.  In fact, Jesus was poor.

Ever hear a message that just sucked you in and made you ask yourself "how do I need to change - right NOW?"

Tim Keller's stellar sermon "Doing Justice" is one of those messages you HAVE to hear, it's simply that good and that important.  Compassion and action are words that are vital to Elevation thinking.  It's vital that we continue to learn from the Word of God and evaluate our actions and thoughts from the Eternal Standard.

Listen to this message, it can be downloaded to your mp3 player or listened to directly on your computer.

Caution: if you listen to this before bed as I did your mind may be very awake for a while!

How To Start A Spiritual Discussion

gold copy

Peter tells us in his first epistle " always be ready to give reason for the hope that is within you".

Question , how many people have asked you about this lately?

Maybe we need to develop deeper relationships so that people can see the hope and joy inside our lives and want to know where the well of such things is located...

Ed Stetzer has some ideas on how to get started in these postmodern times.  Great thoughts on starting "spiritual discussions" - worth a read : HERE

The Latest Scoop

Elevation continues to gain volunteers, fans  and well wishers.  We had another 65 people (in addition to the 20 or so at our beach bonfire) show up to our vision night to hear more about the dream.

small elevis

It's been cool seeing people of all ages resonating with the vision and plan.  There is a lot of excitement about the new ministry.  We recorded the vision session, but true to form the recording broke midway through.  We've been experiencing an uncommon barrage of technical problems in the last 3 weeks, all three of my email accounts have gone down at different times, my wireless at home broke, I lost voice mail on my cell for a time, then I lost text mail and then mobile web puked on another day recently.  My Harley (electrical problem) and spa are down too lol...If you have tried to reach me and not gotten an answer I am not ignoring you please try again, I think my communication channels are working again.

What's next for Elevation??? Next step = to hire a youth pastor to replace me and then I go full time in Elevation!  Great news ,we have a couple of great  replacement candidates already!  I am also getting started on interviewing and hanging out with possible Elevation Music pastors too so if you know a world class worship leader give them my number!

I will be out of contact from this Sunday - through the 20th : on the road again , this time to MEXICO with 60 of our students and staff for our annual Mexico mission.  We'll build a home for a needy family, run a large kids outreach in a Tijuana condo sprawl and have a team serving at an orphanage too.  Strange to think this will likely be my last trip as a youth pastor after almost 24 years dedicated to youth.  I still plan to volunteer for youth stuff and even help as staff for trips from time to time and to still feed into youth workers - but this is the end of an era in a way.

Burglar alert : Our house sitter is drinking tequila and sharpening his chainsaw on our couch at this very moment... he looks dangerous.

That's all the news that's fit to print.

Well, It's A Small World After All

On July 12th I blogged about Scot McKnight and his series of articles on Missional Jesus.  Small world... this morning I found out that Scot is here in Denmark at this very conference, I just spoke with him a moment ago after he finished his session challenging the Danes to missional living.  It was strange to have met him here after just writing about him.  Also, the first night we were here the Glen Kaiser Band played, remember the Res Band? - great blues and boogie!  Also I didn't know I'd run into some of those Bog Bodies I had read about - but Tuesday we were out in town and saw some dead guys at a museum...spooky crusty old dudes...  The picture below is of a bog man, Glen Kaiser is aged but is better preserved.

Missional Jesus

scotmcknight --Scot McKnight, the author of The Jesus Creed  is a very intelligent man and has written an excellent series of blogs on the missionality of Jesus.  There are 15 "Missional Jesus" posts (so far) in the series. I recommend reading them all in 1 - 15 order.  Here is the page where the most recent post is found and you can navigate backwards to post number one from there.

If you may be an Elevat-or or Eleva-trix in the future, read through these posts I think they will bless you.  As you read ask you: what was truly important to Jesus?  What was and is the Missio Dei?  How could Elevation  be formed as a mob obsessed with the Mission of Jesus?

Off To Denmark

Sunday morning (July 8th) my oldest daughter Carly and I head for Odder, Denmark on a new mission,  Andrea and Jessi will be staying home as we fly off to the Chaos.

Denmark, along with much of the world is a truly post-Christian zone.  Most Danish people and especially younger people will never enter a church or engage Jesus.  Example: We had a Danish girl over last month who shared she wasn't sure why a young person would ever go into a church other than for a wedding.  We will serve the local church and Youth for Christ in helping to raise up a new generation of young Jesus- followers.

I will be traveling with 17 of my students and the amazing Chris Gudnason to help Youth For Christ Denmark put on a big sheeebang called Danish Oasis.  We will spend the first week setting up circus tents, building bridges, walkways and basically assist in building the encampment for the 2500-3000 Danish people that will attend the event.  The second week our team will lead ministry  for 250+ middle schoolers in one of the huge tents, the one parked waaaay out by the city sewer system - pandemonium will ensue.  I love pandemonium!

Youth for Christ has set up a website that will have pictures and updates throughout the trip - tune in and check up on the fun.  I will have internet access and will be updating this blog on Sacred Digital with my pictures, stories and impressions from Denmark as well.  Keep us in your prayers!

Getting Past...

plane

About a month ago I was on a plane flying south and I fell into an interesting conversation...  The man sitting next to me was in his mid-thirties, he was causally dressed and seemed relaxed.  As the plane screamed across the California skyline he kept peering at my laptop screen to see what I was working on.  Finally he asks "what are you flying south for " and I tell him I am a pastor and I was headed to a church in Southern California to share ideas with them on how to start new expressions of the church that will better engage people in a postmodern world.  He began to tell me that he recently started attending a church and was interested in God.  I asked him about the church he attends, what drew him, what it's like, if it fits him well and the like.  He made this statement when we spoke of the worship music at the church he has been attending:

"of course ...you have to get past the music..."

The worship was so out of his culture-mix that it was a barrier for him to overcome if he wanted to find out about God. He was willing to endure the music because he was searching for God.

Now here's the question, shouldn't we embrace music that is culturally contextual and even winsome for those who are of this newer mindset and the emerging generation?  Most "contemporary" services use music that was contemporary 25 years ago, -for some people the sound and style is nails on chalk board, even for many Christians.

The plot thickens... as we continued our discussion the stewardess brings the man a beer he had previously ordered and I saw him tense up as she asked "did he want a Bud, Bud Light or Bud Select".  He spoke quickly and nervously, it was obvious he was very uncomfortable having a beer in front of a pastor.

So let's see: His understanding of God-stuff is that the music is something to be endured and you should feel awkward drinking even one beer in the presence of a Christian...  Hmmm.  Time to think about how effective we are in bringing the barrier free Gospel to those who are not yet familiar with the Goodness of Jesus.  How often does our subculture or personal preference issues stumble not-yet-believers?

For the record, I put my new travel friend back at ease by mentioning "I have never tried Bud Select, Budweiser has a kind of bitter flavor to me - what is Select like?"  - he told me about it, relaxed and we talked about God for the rest of the plane ride.  Food for thought.

Should The Church Pursue Cultural Relevance?

ancient

For many Christians the idea of the Church desiring to be relevant to the culture it finds itself in is tantamount to selling out, watering down and losing first love.  We all live, minister and worship in a culture that is extra-biblical even if it is a Christian subculture.  Jesus Himself ministered powerfully in the culture of His day and did so with deep relevance and  complete holiness.  Ed Stetzer wrote this wonderful article about this controversy, it's worth a read.

If you haven't read Ed Stetzer & David Putman's excellent book Breaking the Missional Code it is truly in my highest possible recommend category

Elevation the new expression of Santa Cruz Bible Church is coming!  Are you an artist with mad computer skills?  Do you know someone who fits this description? Would you like to take part in a challenge to envision and design a killer logo for the new ministry and community?

We're looking for something really simple: examples are things like the “Nike swoosh” or the Apple computer “apple”, a single simple visual.  We’re taking submissions from now into August.  We’ll make a final decision from all the submissions in August.  Submissions need to be a jpg or other electronic email-able file.

This isn’t a paying gig, just a way for artists to take part in the foundation laying adventure of Elevation.  Want to be part of something wild?  Turn on your computer, put on some creativity inducing music like Pink Floyd Meddle and join me in creating a visual future.

All submissions should be sent to chuckk@santacruzbible.org

Elevation means...

bound together

Elevation is the name of the new ministry and community that I will be leading and pastoring.  The name has a special soulful tingle for me personally.  Elevation was the name of the ministry my heart-brother Dan Snow was engineering at the time of his tragic and early death

So Dan, Elevation lives in your honor.

Seize The Ether

In this aeon time and space matter less, yet our churches seem mired in time and space... Ten Challenges Facing the Church in Cyberspace is a great post that you should read.  How could you or your ministry better seize the ether?  Dream with me how we can touch people: locally, nationally and globally through technology and through the internet in particular.  Elevation will be seeking to leverage technology to love and serve the world in unique ways from it's inception, dream with me.

Passion

light

I've been getting truly overwhelming positive response to the announcement that we're starting a new alternative expression of the church at SCBC.  Younger (and younger at heart) people are excited to see a missional and 21 century relevant form forming.  Here's a passionate email from a young guy in his 20's  -he serves on staff at another church.  See what he thinks about the need for ministry designed for his generation.
Hey Chuckk! This sounds SO exciting!! I've been trying to get my church to take notice of the very concerning absence of my generation. Unfortunately I'm not sure that they'll be ready to do anything about it for a long time because there aren't enough people aware yet, and more importantly, not enough people are aware that can do anything about it. That's kinda what my email was talking about a while back when I was saying that things are really difficult at my church right now. I'm just not being heard due to my age and a fair number of other reasons.

This is something that I am SO passionate about and that God has fervently had on my heart. I want to reach out to my generation and challenge them in their faith. I want to clear up the their foggy eyed misconceptions of God and what the Bible teaches. I want them to experience the love that God has and that He calls us to live out. I want them to understand how amazing it is to be in a relationship with Christ, and to see that it isn't hokey. Every time I think about this God puts the Great Commissioning on my heart and reminds me to be like Simon and Andrew and become a fisher of men. He also simultaneously reminds me of Proverbs 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another." I want to be a part of a church, and be amongst peers who are so sharpened and so passionate for Christ that Christ's love just oozes all over  everyone they come into contact with. I believe that if there is a core group of believers that is this passionate, we will not only grow together, but it will be so easy and natural to fish for men. People won't be able to help but want to come see what it is that is feeding the deeply seeded peace, and love, and joy that is in those people that come, and a community can be changed. My generation can be reached. My generation knows they need something.. but there are so many different things professing to be the solution to what is missing in their life that it is incredibly overwhelming. And I think as a result we just never commit to anything, do as little as possible, and cling to things offering instant gratification (alcohol, sex, drugs, money, status, etc). They are out there just waiting for that thing, we just need to build strong enough groups of believers that are strong and passionate about Christ, so that we can go to them and tell them or get them to come hear about Christ. I know that Christ will do the rest. This is something I am SO passionate about, but haven't been able to do anything about on my own because I haven't been able to find any leadership that is strong enough to take that risk, and to make that difference.

I read your Proposal to SCBC and I though it is right on. This ISN'T a movement to reject the church and reconstruct everything ourselves. It is, in fact, a new arm of the church that needs to be grown, just like your starfish model so perfectly illustrates. This isn't a reinvention of church, but a new and necessary addition to the church body. It isn't superior, nor inferior to the church that exists, merely a different expression of the same thing. This has happened historically in the church many times before, we just happen to be on the cusp of the next mode of expression.

Anyway, this being said Chuckk. PLEASE let me know if there is any way I can be a part of your new ministry in regards to worship through music, tech, websites, artistic  expression (akaflierss, logos, videos,  or whatever graphic expressions you need), teaching, promotion, advising, ideas... anything really. I am really passionate about reaching my age group as God has put them on my heart and I want to help serve in any way that I can. I'll be praying for your ministry Chuckk.

Big News : My World Is Changing

direction

The BIG news is this; after a couple of years of prayer and study and a year of serious God-wrestling I will be changing lanes from youth ministry to lead-pastoring a next generation church expression.  Andrea and I have been praying about planting a new church or starting an alternative ministry within a church and we have heard God's clear call to start a new expression of the church at Santa Cruz Bible.  It will be called Elevation and will feature a high energy Sunday night service and mission focused community.  Elevation will be for people of any age but will be focused towards people 18-35.  We're certain of God's powerful and clear leading and we are on fire with joy and fresh vision.  Keep an eye on this blog for regular updates and a journal of our journey in launching and leading a new expression of the church within an existing church.

As for youth ministry, after 23 years of ministry to high schoolers I'll still be helping out at high school group as a volunteer - probably for life : once a youth pastor always  a youth pastor.  In fact if I didn't have this clear leading form God I would do high school min for the rest of my life with great enthusiasm.   Our Senior Pastor and Executive Pastor are excited and very supportive and our Elder Board unanimously voted for us to begin this new expression.  The fuse has been lit, here we go!  Below is an excerpt from the proposal I presented our Elder Board: it will give you a bit of an overview of my thinking and heart.

Proposal for a “New Arm” of Ministry at SCBC

I.        The Need

A.       Churches across America are seeing significant decline in 18-35 age range.  Surveys also show less young singles and families are returning to churches after “sowing their wild oats in college”.

B.       SCBC has seen a radical decline in the 18-35 age range.

C.       The American culture has changed and a smaller number people will likely seek out current church forms.

D.       Our community has only 3-4 churches primarily focused on the emerging generations.  The community has tens of thousands of people unreached in this age range.  We need more churches intentioned for unreached and postmodern people.

E.       Our church and the greater community would be well served by additional church expressions that are purposely shaped for emerging generations.

1.        1 Corinthians 9:22b I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.

II.      I propose we start a “New Arm” of ministry at Santa Cruz Bible Church to address these needs

1.        Note: Definition of a “New Arm” follows.

B.       The Starfish Analogy

1.        A Starfish has a central “body” called the disk.  A starfish has multiple arms extending from the disk.  Each arm is connected to and is a vital part of the starfish’s body but articulates and expresses itself individually and differently.

a)       Some “arms” of our current ministry at SCBC include:

(1)       The Main Services
(2)       Celebrate Recovery
(3)       The Hispanic Ministry
(4)       Youth Ministries

C.       Definition: “New Arm of Ministry” = A new worship service and mission-focused community purposed to reach and grow the people who will be attracted and engaged by a different expression of the historic and biblical Christian faith.

D.       Points of connection to the “disk” of the SCBC starfish.

1.        A common doctrinal statement and mission statement

2.        A common Elder Board with representatives of the New Arm included in the future

3.        Common financial, people and property resources

4.        Common discipleship groups, children’s and youth ministries and other all church ministries.

III.    My Calling

A.       After much prayer, counsel, study and consideration I feel a clear Call to lead a fresh expression of Christ’s Church either as a New Arm within an existing church like SCBC or as a new autonomous plant.

IV.    Values

A.       Worship Gatherings

1.        Scripture-centric life-change focused teaching

2.        A ministry primarily shaped for 20-40 age group, but welcoming and embracing all generations

3.        Use of technology to communicate and spread the impact of the church

4.        Use of Multisensory / Multimedia teaching, learning and expression

5.        Variety: in music, environments, teaching / learning experiences, interaction and service order

6.        Use of interaction in services both verbal and technological

7.        Excellence in all things

8.        The utilization of more current forms of music for worship and audio environments

9.        Utilization of the arts

10.      Culturally current expressions that provide a strong attractional element to the gatherings

11.      A firm grasp on orthodox historic Christian theology

12.      A high value in joy, humor and encouragement

13.      Authentic, transparent teaching / learning

B.       Lifestyle of the Community

1.        I/A Approach:  Incarnational / Attractional

2.        Emphasis on Incarnation as the primary means of reaching people which are not yet Christian, as in Christ’s ministry.

a)       John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

3.        A missional focus on less reached people groups and cultures in Santa Cruz .

4.        Hospitality in homes as a central practice

5.        Living a life others would desire to emulate

6.        Less is more: limiting programs, meetings, and subcultural events that separate the believer from the lost community too often.

7.        Studying, discipling, meeting and worshipping off-campus and out in the greater community whenever possible.

8.        A church characterized by loving the lost and living life regularly in their midst while still living holy lives.

a)       1 Peter 2:12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

b)       Luke 7:34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners."

9.        A community of both saved and unsaved people with a believing church at its core.

a)       Belong, Believe, Behave.

b)       Allow and invite not- yet-believers to take part in the life and works of the community.

10.      Mission as a lifestyle

a)       Challenging believers to engaging in deep ongoing friendships with not yet believers from the highest levels of leadership across the board.

b)       Regular, ongoing service to the poor and needy locally and globally.

(1)       Missions as more than mere trips and service as more than mere projects

C.       Technology Redeemed

1.        Design a Virtual Online Campus for those who are not able to or ready to visit.

2.        Intentionally use the Internet as the front door of the church.

3.        Use the Internet as a greater communication and equipping tool locally, regionally and globally

D.       Multiplication

1.        Explore Multisite church through future extension. Campuses.

2.        Form intentional apprenticeships towards future plants

V.      What this New Arm is not:

A.       Not: Chuckk “moving up” to College Career Ministry

B.       Not: A generational ministry

C.       Not: a “Youth Service”

D.       Not: A start up church that would leave the main church but would remain part of the main church and plant other new churches

E.       Not: A deconstructionist reaction to 20th century church models

VI.    Key Staff Positions

A.       Lead Pastor =Chuckk

B.       We will hire a full time Pastor of Worship

C.       We will hire a full time Administrative Assistant

VII.  Suggested Primary Service Setting

A.       Sunday evenings initially in the Student Center and moving to the Main Auditorium if / when it grows larger

B.       Begin team building and vision dreaming this fall

C.       Begin weekly full services in January, God willing.

VIII.            Leadership Culture of this New Arm of Santa Cruz Bible Church

A.       Behavior and lifestyle would be limited by all Scriptural mandates.

B.       Behavior and lifestyle would be not be limited by 20th century Christian subcultural traditions.

C.       Christian freedoms must be practiced in wisdom and moderation.  Purity in lifestyle and witness is vital and must be guided by the Scriptures.

If you are a member of SCBC this stirs up lots of questions like what will the ministry look like , what will happen to our youth ministry etc - You can find some of the answers here at  the ELEVATION FAQ v1.0.  If you are a student or a parent of a student  the "Official Letter" is found here.  God is up to great things, pray.

Cheers, this will be epic.
